Smokin’ in Steele (update 3)
Well the weather in the morning was much less than ideal in Owatonna with consistent rain until about noon! But the BBQ and Blues in Steele County prevailed and Team Double K Kitchens enjoyed the day.
The morning started at 7:30 with a mandatory meeting for all backyard contestants. Event leaders did a nice job explaining the turn in times. Terry and Josh attended. They also handed out the 3 pork loins to each to prepare for the public. They also announced the mystery meat. Yes-it was SPAM!
The Webers preformed well in the cool rain! We put all meats on about 30 to 45 minutes earlier than i should have. This was done due to the rain-expecting the cook times to be longer due to weather. That was an error on our part. Trust your Weber products to perform regardless of conditions.
The results of all meats turned out well. We received positive feedback on our Butter Garlic Pork Loin. It was done right at 11:00am and just in time for the gates to open. The public said it was refreshing to have a team deviate from the typical BBQ taste.
Chicken turn in was at 1:00pm. They were awesome. I think Michelle was first in line.
Rib turn in was at 1:30pm. Ours looked and tasted fantastic but they were already seperating on back side from bone so we knew they were going to scored as over done.
The SPAM turn in was at 2:00pm. This was not going to be scored for the event so it did not have the same priority as the others. Pineapple juice was effective as a marinade with the meat to reduce the saltiness with the cooked meat.
- The Results:
- Chicken-15th
- Ribs-16th
